Our land has many rivers allowing us to exchange and trade goods between the more fertile south and the Canadian Shield, where few crops can be grown. Our Algonkian neighbours to the north provide fish, game and furs and in return receive corn, beans, squash and other crops. The coming of Europeans has made us what you call “middlemen” between the French and the tribes to the west. We provide those tribes with your metal tools and pots in return for furs that we trade with the French.
