Wendat clothing is made from the hides of deer and beaver. Men wear loincloths and moccasins, adding leggings and sleeves and a cloak made of fur in winter. Women dress the same way, substituting a skirt for the loincloth. We wear body paint and beads and red is a favourite colour with porcupine quills and feathers for decoration. Women wear ornamental bone combs in their hair. Wampum made of shells, bones and glass beads is another popular decoration. Men also have fire pouches on their backs in which they have tobacco pipes, charms and other personal belongings. Pipes are highly prized, and we never speak of business or come to any meetings without first smoking a pipe. Return to Other Ways of Seeing... |
