As you know, I have had a number of books published giving accounts of my explorations and adventures in New France. I include in them descriptions of the geography and people of these new lands. Maps have been included to acquaint the authorities with the possibilities for settlement and the routes available for trade. Some of these maps I have extended with information I got by having the Indians draw maps for me. Many of these maps I found to be very accurate when I later visited the region.

You may have noticed a subtle change in the direction of my journals after the building of the Habitation at Quebec in 1608. Far more of my time was then taken up with the fur trade and settlement and my journals reflect this along with increased observations on the habits of the natives. As I noted in the dedication to the King, following a description of the previous volumes as being suitable for navigators and seamen; “In this volume you will be able to note more particularly the manner and mode of life of these peoples, both in detail and in general, their wars, weapons, methods of attack and defence, their expeditions, narrated with many particulars, of a nature to satisfy and inquiring mind.” [Champlain, Works, Vol. 3, p. 3]

Indeed during the period of 1614 to 1618, I struggled to maintain my administrative position in New France in the face of court intrigue against the trading company. I had hopes that the Church would support our cause in New France with the prospect of bringing many natives to the true faith. Indeed my bringing four Recollect priests to New France in 1615 was a start in this direction.
